Taxotere vs. Taxol

What is the difference between Taxol and Taxotere? Is one stronger than the other?

by CCF-RN,MSN-rf, May 18, 2004 12:00AM
Dear ps131:  Both Taxol and Taxotere are members of the same family of drugs, the Taxanes.  As such they have many similarities, their mechanism of action against the tumor is similar and their side effect profiles are similar.  Chemically, however, they are different drugs.  This means that in any given situation one drug might work better than another - not necessarily predictably.  In the field of breast cancer, trials are ongoing to see if one or the other drug is better both in terms of efficacy and tolerance.
