Tram Flap

Tram Flap

I was diagnosed with DCIS through out my right breast.  My surgeon recommended a mastectomy.  I visited my plastic surgeon and he advised I was a good candidate for tram flap or implants.  Since I have a lot of extra tummy tissue and don't want to have to do anything to my breast that has no problem, I opted for the Tram Flap.  My surgery is on May 15 and I'm beginning to get a little scared. It seems the only thing I've heard or read about the Tram Flap has been negative.  If there is someone out there who has had this surgery and could offer advice, I would really appreciate it.  Thank you!

Hi there.

I believe that the best person that can give you the pros and cons of tram flap will be your plastic surgeon.  Make sure you understand all of these before you undergo the operation.  If in the end you are not amenable to the risks of tram flap operation (longer rehabilitation, some pain, decrease in abdominal wall muscle strength) then you may consider other forms of breast reconstruction (like the use of implants, with skin or nipple sparing operation).  I suggest you discuss this in depth with your doctor.

Regards.
