Tram flap and Hernia

Tram flap and Hernia

I had a bi-lateral Mastectomy and Tram Flap reconstruction. I am 2 years out and now have a good size hernia. I want to the Surgeon and he says there is not enough good tissue to attach a new mesh to cover the needed area. Is there any other options? Thank YOU...

Hi there.

Though TRAM flap reconstruction is indeed one of the best methods for reconstructing the breast, it does carry a risk of hernias since this would weaken the abdominal wall overall strength by about 10-20%.  A common problem is also that if ever hernias develop, it is really difficult to have this treated due to the limited amounts of tissue that can cover the defect.  I would suggest that you get a second opinion from other surgeons who may have a better experience with handling the situation.  Also take note of other symptoms such as pain, changes in bowel habit, which may reflect problems with the herniated bowel segments.

Regards.
