If indeed the surgeon recommends lumpectomy then some sampling of lymph nodes would be done at this time ... most likely a sentinel node biopsy to determine if the cancer has invaded the lymphatic system. After all the Pathology reports are in she will no doubt have a consultation with an Oncologist who will recommend the proper treatment based on the complete picture. You are correct in one respect; if there is no lymph node involvement, radiation would probably be the recommended treatment and possibly several years of Tamoxifen, depending of course if the cancer is Estrogen dependant.
