Treatment second time round

by pinkbunnies, Apr 16, 2008 11:37AM
If you have had radiotherapy , mastectomy, tamoxifen and a breast reconstruction for a breast cancer first time around what treatment are you given if you have a recuurence in the reconstructed breast.
I know it depends on the type of cancer but what happens to the reconstructed breat - do they have to take it off again? Can you have another reconstruction after?

Has anyone else been in this situation?

Hi there!

The best thing to do with any cancer that recurs on the local site is for it to be removed by surgery if possible.  In a reconstructed breast this can still be possible but the question of having it reconstructed for the second time will depend on the extent of the tumor and the expertise of the surgeon.

After the possible second surgery, other options would be to undergo chemotherapy, or depending on your age/menopausal status, tamoxifen may be changed to a different drug or have you undergo ovarian ablation surgically.

Hope this helps.  Regards...
