Triple negative breast cancer..is there hope?

by nycsass, Aug 05, 2008 10:11AM
My oncologist called me last Friday with my path report and told me immediately that I would need chemotherapy followed by radiation. She told me I would not be a candidate for post op  medication follow-up. I had no problem with that but I had asked her for alternatives to chemo because I took Methotrexate for Rheumatoid arthritis, which eliminated my pain and joint problems but gave me chemo brain...which I knew nothing about until I started doing Breast Cancer research and found the term. I can plot to the minute post RA chemo  therapy when my brain left the building; and it's not back fully yet.
Anyway when I  got my  hard copy Path report yesterday I found that I am triple negative. The fact that my doctor didn't tell me why I was to have chemo first...though she was very sweet and gentle with me...now fills me with feat.
I am transferring my treatment to a HHC NYC hospital  this week I have Medicare Part A B and D and am on  disability, but my ex-husband canceled my secondary. I can't sleep well and get better with huge bills accumulating daily.
I will take all my X-ray and path reports to the Breast clinic Thursday and then get scheduled for the Oncology clinic.
My question is with this Triple Negative Cancer are there any new treatments on the horizon or clinical trials available in the NYC, NY area. Do I have a prospect of beating this type of cancer. I have friends who are well into their 5-6 years but they are on oral medications and were obviously  ER/PR or HER-2-NEU positive;

     Triple negative breast cancer is just as treatable and curable as other breast cancers.  Triple negative just means two things: 1)your tumor was not fueled by female hormones and 2)you are not a candidate for Herceptin or the anti-hormone treatments such as Tamoxifen, so chemotherapy is your only choice.
     I had triple negative breast cancer and had my surgery almost five years ago.  I completed my chemotherapy 4 1/2 years ago.  I am still cancer-free.
     There are clinical trials going on for treatments for triple negative breast cancers.  I am sure some of these are in the NYC area.  BreastCancer. org recently did an online conference with doctors about triple negative breast cancer.  If you go to their website, you will be able to read the transcript.
     More important than your hormone status are things like the size of the tumor, the grade of the tumor, and your node status.  Do you know these?
     My thoughts are with you.
Regards,
Brenda
