Tumor Markers

by sarahyman, Aug 26, 2009 07:11PM
I am almost a 5 year breast  cancer survivor, IDC, stage llB, 8 chemos, mastectomy, reconstruction.
My tumor markers up until now have been in the 18 range (CA 27 29). Had my 6 month check up and they were 66.
Oncologist repeated test a week later and now at 77. I will now have a PET scan next week.

How reliable are tumor markers and how concern should I be? Thanks for any input.

Tumor markers can rise and fall for many reasons and it's impossible to speculate what is causing the rise in your case. They are reliable but often they don't necessarily mean a recurrance or metastises. Hopefully the PET will clarify the matter but PET can also return false positives. Sorry I can't be of more help.   Regards .....
