Reading your comments makes me wonder.... if it turns out to be begins does it mean that once a girl has a lump more lumps are goin to come in the future?? This really makes me feel bad. I also think i feel a little one in the same breast. :-( im so worried and its not letting me live my life.

Thanks!

I now have an irrational mental image of you in my head, appearing as Adam Corolla of the "Man Show" when he did his "If I Were King" bit...

(Don't know if you ever saw the Man Show, but my husband made me watch about 4 seasons of it.  That particular bit was very funny!)

If I were king, I'd get all practitioners to stop ordering ultrasound for palpable lumps. When it's palpable, it makes more sense to insert a needle. At age 20, it's nearly certain it's not a cyst, so the ultrasound only is a waste of time and money since it tells what's already known. When a lump is solid, it's routine for the radiologist to mention biopsy; and having the needle aspirtation, that's a form of biopsy. That the edges were "irregular" on ultrasound is often not very meaningful: ultrasound is an echo, not a true image. What goes on at edges has to do in part with how sound bounces. Fibroadenoma is by far the most common finding for distinct round lump in a 20 year old. In my practice, if it feels like one and the needle aspiration finds cells that are consistent, and if the woman prefers not to have it removed, I consider it safe to leave it. It's also a very simple matter to remove them; when they're easily feelable, it can be done as an office procedure under local anesthesia.

When I was 18 I had a solid lump that was diagnosed as a fibroadenoma ( benign tumor common in young women).  I chose to have it removed, however many doctors now think that is unnecessary.  I continued to have many cysts over the years and had several needle aspirated biopsies.  When I was 50 I was diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma.  I had a lumpectomy, radiation, and hormonal therapy.  I am now 55.  The moral of the story is that because of your age your lump is probably benign but always keep vigilant.

Rita - your history sounds just like mine.  When I was in my early 20's, I had my first fibroadenoma removed.  Over the ensuing 30 years I was very vigilant, having about (I lost track)five more surgical removals and then needle aspiration biopsies.  Each procedure was extremely anxiety provoking especially after my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer.  At age 58 (a year and a half ago), I wasn't able to "dodge any more bullets" and was treated for invasive ductal carcinoma with a lumpectomy, negative nodes, chemo, and radiation. Even though the excised lump was 2.5 cm (there were two small fibroadenomas found in the specimen), I feel confident about the future and continue to watch carefully.  Hope you continue to do well.

Dear LEB15129:  Ultrasounds are used primarily for differentiating solid and cystic (fluid filled) structures.  Beyond this, it is not diagnostic.  When they do show solid structures, the films are compared with mammogram and then correlated with the history and physical to determine the best course of action.  You should discuss this with your breast specialist who knows the results of your other examinations and can make the best recommendation as to whether and/or what type of biopsy may be needed.  It may be that a biopsy will be the only way to determine whether or not this structure is benign or malignant.

about a month and a half ago I noticed a lump on my right breast. I'm 20 years old by the way and this concerned me so i went to my doctor and she told me lets wait 1 month to see if it goes away. However, since it didnt, she sent me for a ultrasound and today i went to see a breast specialist. The ultrasound says it is solid and it measures 1.5 cm. She did a needle apsiration and told me to go back next week to get the results. She tells me that because of my age that she thinks its just a Fibro(i dunno how to spell it). But what concerns me is that the ultrasound said that a biopspy was recommended, does this mean that they think it could be cancer? Also, i saw that the ultrasound said it was slightly irregular... what does this mean!?!?!?! to me when I got the ultra sound it looked oval, but i guess that saw something irregular about it. I'm so scared, and even though the doctor was telling me not to lose sleep over this, it's causing me to be so stressed out that I cant think of anything else but this. Has anyone had a similar experience with a good outcome? I need to hear good stories because I'm so scared.

This once again demonstrates the superiority of needle aspiration over ultrasound for a palpable mass: a needle into the lump would likely resolve the problem, either by making it disappear if it's in fact a simple cyst, or by sampling the tissue if it's not. Meanwhile, anything that's even in part cystic is pretty unlikely to be cancer; but in your case the nature of the lump is not yet fully resolved. Seeing a breast surgeon would be a good idea; either for another opinion, or perhaps for a more definitive test.

I do have an appointment for a ultrasound biopsy in 4 days.  Your comments eased my nerves a bit as reading some of that information in the report was a bit overwhelming to me.  Thanks you so much for your comment and this website.
