What to do

Yesterday, after having had a mammogran, and then a sonagram, I was told I have a lump in my breast.  Is it better to do a needle biopsy, or a lumpectamy.  Also, I have itching in this breast.  Is that usual?  I have not yet seen a doctor.  I am really very concerned and upset about this.

Dear Muffette, You will be referred to a surgeon who can evaluated the mammogram and ultrasound and make recommendations.  The surgeon will discuss with you what type of biopsy they are recommending.  He/she will usually propose the least invasive method that can give the most information.

Types of biopsies include fine needle aspiration, core biopsy, ultrasound-guided core biopsy, stereotactic biopsy, or open excisional biopsy.  The type of biopsy recommended by your physician depends on how large the breast lump or abnormal area is; where in the breast it is located; how many lumps or abnormal areas are present and if you have any other medical problems.

Regarding itching in the breast it is difficult to say is this new? is this associated with a rash?  It is not a usual symptom of cancer if that is what you are asking.

Today I had a core biopsy.  It was not painful, but I was afraid at the beginning, and then was able to relax.  I have a small hard lump, and the doctor said that whatever the diagnosis, which I should have in a day or two, the lump should come out.  The lump was not there in a prior mammography in 200l.  I still have the itching, and have asked the doctor about it, but he did not think there was a connection.  I think I will have the lump removed as soon as possible after receiving the results, good or bad.  What do you think.?
