What to expect?

A 60 year old family member was recently diagnosed with Invasive Ductal Carcinoma. A lumpectomy revealed a 2.5cm tumor that was estrogen receptor positive. She has opted for a modified radical mastectomy and lymph node dissection to be followed by chemotherapy. She is wondering what the typical recovery time is from the surgery and if there are usually any long term restrictions on physical activity? Also, what would be the usual types and duration of chemotherapy in a case like hers?

Dear jmurphy45:  Recovery from a mastectomy with lymph node dissection obviously varies from patient to patient.  Usually the patient is sent home from the hospital with a drain.  This will remain in place until the fluid drainage is at a minimum (usually a week or so).  Depending on the preferences of the doctor, an arm exercise program is prescribed.  Patients can begin normal activities on the advice of their physicians.  Physical activity is not specifically limited.  However, if lymph nodes are removed, caution must be taken to avoid cutting or injuring the arm on the surgical side.  This includes using the arm for blood pressure checks or blood draws.  Caution should also be taken when flying in a airplane (an elastic sleeve should be worn).  All of these activities will hopefully reduce the risk of lymphedema (accumulation of fluid in the arm).  Types and duration of chemotherapy will be determined based on the final pathology, lymph node status, and her general state of health.
