What's going on with my left breast?

I am 39 yrs. old. I had my first mammo. 1 yr. ago due to pain, discharge (white and sometimes yellow) and a small lump. I was called back for a repeat mammo. my left breast appeared (according to the doctor who read my results) to have swollen lymph nodes. I later had an ultrasound. When the doctor came in to look at the monitor he told me that the lymph nodes were probably not cancerous. The technician wanted him to look at an area on the screen and said....."what about this area...." he immediately cut her off and said there was no problem and to return in 6 mos. He said it was probably due to a recent cold or something. I recently went again for another mammo recheck and was told not to come back  for 6 mos for another recheck. what is going on. lately i have been having extreme sensations in my left breast. i feel this warmth that starts at the outer edge of my breast, and ends up at my nipple. It then gets really painful. i cant even lay down on my left breast. what do you think is going on with me?

Hi,

Do get back to us with the reports.

Also it would help to know if any needle aspiration or FNAC or biopsy procedure was done ever.

Keep us posted.
Good luck.
Regards.

thank you for your responses. i keep all my records and will have to locate them to report to you the actual findings.

i have been tracking by calendar to see if it is cyclical with menstruation. i have yet to determine any connection.

my youngest child is 4, i stopped breastfeeding him at age two.

no breast cancer to my knowledge. however there is cancer in my family. my father survived testicular cancer, he was 38. my mother cervical. both living. maternal grandfather died of cancer of the esophagus. uncles and aunts (maternal side) lung cancer and died.

i had nipple retraction off and on for the past two years. itchy skin...but no noticable difference in appearance other than more moles appearing on my left breast.

i have swollen lymph nodes all through my neck and armpits. i also have some hypoechoic nodules and hypoechoic complex cysts in my thyroid and have to go back to check that again. lately i have been extremely hoarse and have had a squeezing sensation in my neck. no thyroid condition according to endo. who strictly uses tsh levels. mine is okay. recently saw an ent. for complications in throat. esophagus swollen and larynx. diagnosed me with lpd and put me on aciphex. not sure if this is a correct diagnosis.... i really dont have heartburn.

i have had pain on my left side under rib cage and breast for over thirteen years. seems to coincide with viral or bacterial infections and cold temperature. no official diagnosis other than primary physician calling it costochondritis.

i appreciate your responses. i am a happily married mother of three young sons. i am trying to be proactive for them.

will get the results to you soon. thank you.

Hi,

You need to get a copy of the mamogram and ultrasound reports. Only then could it be said for sure what the radiologist actually reported.

About the sensations and pain - do they alter with your menstrual cycle? Are you on OCP's? These could be two reasons for the pain.

What you could do is try OTC pain relief medications for a few days and see if that helps.

About being getting called every 6 months for a re-evaluation and repeat investigations - that is the normal follow up and management plan in patients with abnormal findings on mammogram or ultrasound.

The lesion is assessed on every follow up for any change in size, shape or characteristics. This is usually done for lesions that are non cancerous or benign almost certainly.

In case of suspicious lesions or malignant looking lesions, further investigations are done for a confirmed diagnosis.

You could be having enlarged lymph nodes or fibroadenoma - a benign lesion causing the symptoms that you are experiencing.

Discuss about this in detail with your doctor.
Do let us know if you have any more doubts.
Good luck.

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hi,

A lump and discharge in the breast may warrant further evaluation.

What does your mammogram/ultrasound results say?

Has it mentioned any fibrocystic changes within the breast?

Inflammatory causes like mastitis may lead to breast tendeness, nipple discharge ( usually yellowish to greenish color) nipple retraction and skin changes over the breast. A condition called  mammary duct ectasia may present similarly.

Do you have children? Do you currently breastfeed any of them?

Is there a family history of cancer?

I suggest you seek consult with a medical oncologist. A biopsy of the lump may be necessary. Bring your imaging results with you.

Good luck.

Keep us posted for any progress.
