They are recommended yearly after age 40. Before you do anything "invasive" as you say I would consider having a mammogram. Mammograms and Ultrasounds often "see" different things and I would certainly have both exams before I considered a biopsy or even a consult with a Surgeon. No, I don't think you are paranoid ... actually I don't think you have been paranoid enough by not having regular mammograms. You are correct that a biopsy is the only way to know the nature of a lump but the advice you referred to "if you wanted" doesn't set too well with me. If I were you I'd get a mammogram and maybe even a second opinion from a Dr. who wouldn't leave all the decisions up to me. I think from your post that you would appreciate a more definite answer than you've been given up to now. Regards ....
