Why Biopsy?

I was diagnosed with distortion of my right breast after a diagnostic mammogram and an ultrasound.  I was told I had 2 choices either a stereo tactic biopsy or to see a surgeon. I chose biopsy because then I would have a definitive answer of what the issue is, and I made the appointment.  I spoke to the nurse in the Breast Center and she said that the description of the abnormality was very vague.  They "saw something" on the ultrasound film that just would not go away and so they want to follow up to make sure of what it is.  Now I am wondering with all that I have read here, was I not offered to take an MRI first.  I am ok getting the biopsy because I'd rather know, and start treatment if necessary, than not.  I asked the nurse does the information mention malignancy or anything? She said no, as I said it's very vague.. it just says that it was an area of distortion that would not go away.  I was also diagnosed with 3 cysts.  They told me so long as they don't bother me, we won't bother them.  Then I got this report saying I needed further follow up.  I am confused and was wondering if there was any further info that could be offered to me.  I go for the biopsy on April 9th.  I was told to get it within the month, so I am.

Thanks!

I sure understand your confusion
In my case a 2nd opinion would have
avoided a mastectomy
What about MRI with contrast ?
Did the dr. give that option?

The best advice in a situation before going into surgery for
any invasion to the breast is a second opinion!

If you don't get a 2nd  opinion, make sure you get all information
prior to biopsy
Sometimes the consent form will say things like
"patient also authorizes A B or C" while under anesthesia
for the biopsy.
If this is not an urgent matter [life v. death]
a 2nd opinion may  give you more peace..
More than likely it is benign from what you posted
and we will all keep you in our prayers that it is~

The cysts would be of no particular concern and would ordinarilly left alone. The susupicious area that couldn't be defined would always require a biopsy. MRI although more sensitive than mammogram or ultrasound is not a diagnostic tool ... only a biopsy can tell if something is benign or malignant. I'm not sure why you didn't want to see a Surgeon .... that would have resulted in a biopsy as well. Interventional Radiologists do biopsies and Surgeons do also. You would have had your answer either way. Good luck with you biopsy ... think BENIGN !!
