Wrong diagnosis in Aspiration Needle Biopsy

Wrong diagnosis in Aspiration Needle Biopsy

I would like to know how common is making a mis-diagnosis in Needle Aspiration Biopsy of the beast tissues?  This is the case of a pathologist doing the needle biaopsy calling the cells malignant, whereas a second openion pathologist is saying "suspecious cells, but not unequivically diagnostic for cancer"
Also, should a positive diagnosis of needle biopsy be followed by an Excision Biopsy rather than going ahead and performing mastectomy?
Appreciate responses from practioners and women who have had similar situations.  Thanks.

Don't know how common mis-diagnosis is, but I sure as heck would never allow a mastectomy based on a needle biopsy...never.

Hi,

A needle aspiration involves removal of cells from the suspicious lesion or site using a needle and then sending it for lab examination. The results are sometimes inaccurate due to the inadequate sample got from the procedure, or the cells being damaged during the aspiration procedure, or the site being in some cases.

A needle aspiration with doubtful or suspicious lesions should always be followed by an excision biopsy for a confirmed diagnosis - where a large piece of tissue and not just cells, are available for examination.

Do let us know if this helps and if you have any more doubts.

Good luck.
