a mass under my arm. it itches...?

i noticed a mass under my arm about a year ago. it itches occasionally, and this morning it is itching a lot. there's no visible skin problem (redness, scale, rash, etc.) now i have a minimum amount of pain in the area i've been scratching. i'm 40. i've been unable to find anything anywhere on the web except in the area of breast cancer... which is pretty scary. is a problem developing?

Dear reneer:  Have you seen a physician about this mass?  A mass that lasts a year should probably be examined.  Also, if you have not had a mammogram, you are due.  There is no way to determine if this mass is a problem without being examined.  You should make an appointment to see a physician who can help determine what is causing the problem.
