abnormal mamo, ultrasound results

abnormal mamo, ultrasound results

I found a lump by accident 7 weeks ago, went to gyn MD who couldn't verify anything felt unusual. So I felt stupid but I feel an area that is not the same as before and not the same as the other breast. Sent me for a dx. mamo, then he told me results were fine but they needed to do an ultrasound, since I felt a lump. The hosp. then sent a letter to me indicatating I needed further eval due to mamo results. Today has Ultrasound. tech didn't focus on the area I pointed out to her, just moved upward and away, stating tissue is different when laying etc. (I'm an RN) However as I told them my breast were puffy and sore since  my period is due in a day. (48 y/o) Due to lumpiness, the area that she pointed out to MD & called it a 2 cm. node may be related to hormone breast changes. MD said to come back and re-test. Tech stated mamo report was non-specific changes, density.  So I now have to go back after period to see if node is there or was just related to period.  The tech told me not to stress out over it.  However this area is away from the area that I feel.  So I guess I feel nothing that is of concern?

Dear honey bun:  It sounds like you may have had a screening mammogram - not a diagnostic.  It is common for a screening mammogram to come back with an abnormality.  In these cases, a diagnostic mammogram would be done to determine if the density is real or just tissue folded over on itself that will resolve with further compression.  Regarding the ultrasound...since you must go back anyway, have them review the entire breast, if for no other reason than your peace of mind.  Likely, the area you felt is not concerning - or I think it would have shown on the ultrasound.  However, it is reasonable to have it reviewed to be certain.
