If a screening mammogram is done and a calcification is found, why isn’t a dx mammo done right away?  Why wait 6 months?  How can anyone tell if there are changes if the magnification isn’t done right away?  Mine showed a spot of calcification thought to be vascular.  I waited 6 months because that was what was recommended.  (I didn’t know there was anything like a magnification mammo).  Now I’m told, the calcification is a birad 4 and to get a bx because of the way the micocalsfications look.  The  non-mag view looks the same as it did 6 months ago. Why wasn’t this dx mammo done 6 months ago?
Thank you

Dear obed:  If a suspicious cluster of calcifications is found, a diagnostic mammogram is usually done as well as a referral to a breast surgeon.  If the calcifications are not particularly suspicious, a repeat mammogram may be recommended in 6 months to be certain there are no changes.

If the mammogram 6 months ago was a BIRAD 4, then additional testing should have been done.  You may want to pose these questions to your doctor who can better clarify your questions as they pertain specifically to your situation.
