additional viewings and ultra sound

I had my first mammogram two weeks ago at the age of 40.  I received a message on my voice mail that I need to come back in for additional viewings and for an ultrasound on both breasts.  I'm frustrated because I can't get in touch with anyone to find out why I'm needing the additional viewings etc......I'm committed to keeping the apointment they made for me but I'm really curious to know if this is normal?  Has anyone else been through this?  Did they tell you why?  What should I expect?????

Help me, my anxiety is through the roof.....:) yikes

japdip is correct. Lots of women get called back for another look if there is anything on the mammogram that they can't be sure of. Without another film to compare with, they have to check everything. Most of the time it just turns out to be your particular breast architecture, with no bad stuff.

I wouldn't get too freaked out over this .... many, many women get a call back and often it's with the first mammogram. It's just an area that they want to zero in on (so to speak) as the call back is for compression views. They wouldn't tell you why because it isn't really clear at this point ... could be simply breast tissue that is folded over on itself .. possibly cysts or any number of things. Since this is a baseline exam it's good to be sure exactly what is present for future reference ... every year all the previous films are compared to note any changes that might have occured. Do keep the appointment though .... it's important now and for the future. It's called "good medical practice" and they are being vigilant in your health care.   Regards ....
