Dear nevy:  Atypical hyperplasia is considered a risk factor for breast cancer.  In addition, columnar hyperplasia may be associated with breast cancer. The purpose of removing the lump is to remove any other areas of hyperplasia and make certain that there are no cancerous cells in the remainder of the lump (the part the needle did not sample).
