atypical cells

atypical cells

my mom has a lump in her right underarm for 6months now and recently she had her biopsy and the result was it was an atypical cell. will she have cancer? i am afraid and nervous for her. please help :(

Hi.

Atypical cells in a lump may represent the first step in the development of frank cancerous cells.  Atypical cells increases the risk of developing an invasive cancer in the future, but this is not automatic.

It is best that the entire lump is removed through surgery, to see if there are any other areas in the lump harboring abnormal cells.   There are drugs that can be taken to lower the risk of eventually developing invasive cancer such as tamoxifen or raloxifene.

I suggest you discuss with her doctors about these options.
