atypical ductile hyperplasia (ADH)

atypical ductile hyperplasia (ADH)

My mammogram showed "micro-calficiations" not present in 2008. More mammograms and stereotactic needle biopsy results were reported as "fibrocystic changes and micro-calcifications." Absolutely benign and nothing to worry about. A week later my MD left me a voicemail asking if I had any questions about my surgical referral?? I called and the radiologist had dictated an addendum (why?) with the ADH diagnosis. Surgical procedure is recommended but no one says what procedure (I have no lump.) My MD (internist) is only doing as the radiologist instructed and doesn't know anything else. I am researching and at this point am skeptical about surgery. Is it really necessary? Is there such a thing as a course of Tamoxifen instead?

A diagnosis of ADH usually calls for surgical removal of the area and sometimes followed by additional treatment such as Radiation and Hormone Therapy. ADH although is NOT cancer, it does double your risk of developing breast cancer in the future. The procedure would be most likely to mark the area with a tiny wire inserted in the Radiology Dept thru a very small needle. You would then go to the OR where the tissue in question would be removed surgically. This is pretty much the routine treatment for ADH.   Regards ....

I think it is very important to have this checked out. I had a similar situation.  It did not look troublesome from mammogram, or ultrasound after my left breast bled brownish blood.  Results were even inconclusive after an MRI assisted biopsy.  I was then told by my gynocologist to see a surgeon for a biopsy.  I saw a surgeon who only does breast surgery (Office located in Tampa, FL).  After consultation and biopsy it was determined that I have hyperplasia, possible precancerous cells.  Because of this diagnosis, I will be watched carefully every six months.  I was told that not all conditions like this result in breast cancer, but that my risk is increased and bears careful monitoring.  I would not have known any of this if I had not accidently bumped my breast!  I am 66 yrs old.  Good luck.
