bilateral mammogram

Findings: There is heterogeneously dense fibroglandular tissue. No suspicious discrete masses, abnormal microcalcifications, architectural distortion, skin thickening,or other indirect evidence of malignancy identified.Benign looking axillary lymph nodes. Impression: There is dense tissue which decreases the sensitivity of mammography. The absence of mammographic abnormality should not preclude further evaluation, or even biopsy if a clinically suspicious mass is palpable. Findings as noted above, see recommendation below,
BIRADS CATEGORY:0

Hi,
When a mammogram shows a density that can make mammograms more difficult to interpret, further investigation is needed. The first thing that occurs is to compare the current mammogram to older mammograms to see if anything has changed. The next step is to do a spot compression.A spot compression mammogram will further define the area of concern. Sometimes the tissue can fold over on itself and cause a "density" to appear. A spot compression will often smooth out the tissue and the "density" will disappear. Often, a second mammogram will confirm that all is okay.
BIRADS( Breast Imaging Reporting and Data Systems) is a quality control system, used by radiologists after interpreting mammograms, ultrasound and MRIs.
This system allows radiologist to categorize the findings by numbers. The scores go from 0 to 5.The higher the number the more suspicious is the abnormality.
Category 0 means that the results are incomplete. The Mammogram/Ultrasound results didn't give the radiologist enough information to make a clear diagnosis. There is no evidence of malignancy stated in your report ,but because the films are not clear, further investigation is needed. The radiologist could recommend a spot compression mammogram,an MRI or even consider a biopsy if there is a palpable lump in the breast
Try not to worry, waiting one week to see your doctor is not too long await.He/she will let you know what other test will be needed in your particular case.Keep in mind that most abnormalities found in the breasts are not serious at all.
Wishing you the best...

In a nutshell, the radiologist reported that nothing abnormal was found.

However, in women such as you, with dense breast tissue, it is harder for a mammogram to "see" everything. Therefore, the radiologist indicated that further imaging (such as an ultrasound), or, if  your doctor has actually felt something that seemed suspicious, even a biopsy, would be in order.

Best wishes for benign results from the further evaluation!

thanks really much appreciated your reply.the reason that am worried is that i do have nipple pain and burning sensation..but if i look at the mirror my nipple is fine no discoloration,no lumps,no bleeding or discharges except for the pain of my nipple and its sensitiveness with fabric friction.that have to wear a bra  all the time to avoid friction from housedress.

I'm glad to hear you haven't had any symptoms other than the pain and burning, which is seldom related to breast cancer.

If further imaginng still  doesn't show anything abnormal, perhaps a breast specialist or  a dermatolgist can determine what is causing your nipple pain/sensitivity.

Please update us when you know more--we care!

Best wishes,
bluebutterfly

You welcome Shirley.
I agree with bluebutterfly2222 that pain in the breast is almost never associated with breast cancer.
I was just wondering since you are 50yrs old, if you are menopausal or approaching menopause.
During this time, many women experience nipple pain and burning sensation due to hormonal fluctuations.
I am also wondering if you taking any hormone replacement therapy,(HRT) to relieve menopausal symptoms because it can cause breast pain too.
If you are taking HRT,it should be the lowest dose and for the shortest time needed.
You and your health care provider need to discuss the risks and benefits concerning this therapy.
Take care...

Hi again Shirley,
Congratulation! your report states "Benign" findings.Meaning that you don't have cancer.I am really very happy to hear this good news!
BIRADS Category 2 means that your breasts are same size and shape and tissue looks normal. Bilateral cysts appear benign.
All you have to do now is not to worry or be fearful of anything. You really have nothing to worry about. All seems to be normal in your report.
Simple cyst are not cancerous and they do not turn into cancer. Many women have this benign condition.
Just follow your radiologist recommendation to have your Mammogram and Ultrasound as scheduled just to check for any changes. You could tell your OB/GYN to monitor your breast's health or if you prefer you could ask to be referred to a breast specialist if you don't have one already.
Try to limit your caffeine intake (coffee, chocolate colas) Also limiting salt from your diet can help shrink the cysts.
Again wishing you all the best!...
