birth control pills

I am in perimenopause and am considering birth control pills for reducing hot flashes that I am starting to feel as well as for birth control. I was wondering if this is a safe thing to do considering that my pathology report from a core biopsy showed "atypical lobular hyperplasia." Are birth control pills safe? Thanks very much!!

Dear miracat:  In general, birth control pills are considered safe.  The current formulations have very low doses of estrogen. Of course, it would be best to have a discussion with your physician, who can make a more "personal" recommendation based on your risk of breast cancer.  He/she can also recommend proper screening.
