blood from nipple

1 week ago, during self exam, I expressed some blood from my left nipple.   Went to doc. and had a mammogram (saw somthing) and then an ultrasound(saw nothing).  My PHP wants me to go to a breast health clinic anyway to find out where the blood is coming from but this morning when I tried to express it, hardly any came out and it was more like watery blood.  So, if this blood completely stops, do I still need to go and see a specialist?

Dear sdhoff:  Women can have some type of nipple discharge or fluid when their breasts are squeezed, and its normal. Squeezing the nipple sends message to the brain and the pituitary gland responds by increasing prolactin levels, which in turn produces discharge from the nipple.  The discharge can come in a variety of colors - gray, green and brown as well as white.  Some women are more prone to more discharge including women on; birth control pills, certain blood pressure medications or on major tranquilizers.  These medications increase prolactin levels in the body.   There is also certain life periods when a person is more likely to get discharge than others: there may be more discharge at puberty and at menopause than the years in-between.

The time to be concerned about nipple discharge is when it’s spontaneous (comes out by itself without squeezing), keeps on happening, and is only on one side.  If it is clear and sticky, like an egg white, or bloody.  Bloody discharge could be a symptom of something more serious.   You may want to make sure to discuss this with your doctor who can ask questions and evaluate as necessary.

If the recommendation is to see a breast health specialist, it makes sense to follow up on this recommendation to make certain all is okay.

Hi sdhoff... :o)
recently, i had a nipple discharged where the nipple is giving out DARK BROWN color discharged. I went for the Health Screening and has to undergo a mammogram and the ultrasound scan.

The result showed that there is a small 7mm module and some benign type micro-calcifications in my R breast. Nevertheless, I still need to see a specialist for furhter histology diagnosis. I've been told by the doctor to do the needle biopsy. I'm arranging for the appt now.

My concern is now,.. after the doing the cone compression mamo, I felt pain on my R breast.

My advise to you sdhoff, please see the doctor.. :o)
