bloody nipple discharge

Hello everyone,

I hope one of you can help me. For the last three days i've been getting small amounts of bloody watery discharge from my nipple on my right breast. I am almost 45 years old  and i have some other issues for the last 5 months which i am trying to get an answer to.

So far i have not been told what is wrong with me. I have sent many posts to the MS  forum here, because i have a lot of high signal white matter and ongoing symptoms with balance and weakness. I have been told that i do not meet the diagnostic criteria for MS by my neurologist but he still wants to do some other Mri's of my Brain with contrast and a cervical spine Mri also.

This new symptom with my breast kind of frightened me a bit, I have read that a lot of benign issues can cause what i am experiencing. I would appreciate any advice any of you can give me.

Many Thanks
Lorraine.

Hi,
Bloody discharge from the nipple can be associated with many different conditions. Most often it could be an intraductal papilloma which is a non-cancerous tumor.
You are right, the bleeding can also happen due to benign conditions ,such as inflammation in the ducts, hormonal imbalance due to menopause, fibrocystic changes and it could be caused by certain type of medication.
However bloody nipple discharge, especially if it’s spontaneous, is always concerning and demands prompt investigation to make sure that there is nothing serious there.
The bloody discharge must be examined under the microscope (called cytological examination) for a diagnosis. So please see your physician for a breast exam and to have the diagnostic test done. Cytology is definitely recommended when the discharge from the nipple is bloody.
Best wishes and I hope that your other health issues will be resolved soon.

Hello again. Many thanks for your reply. I will go and see my doctor and get the cytology done. I did attend the breast clinic on a couple of occasions in the past with painful breasts and i did have a mammogram in the last 2 years, i can't remember exactly when. The consultant at the time said everything was good and that painful breasts are common. Can't remember the name for it now. I do have lumpy breasts also.

I will get this seen to promptly as i did get a fright, and because there is other changes happening also on my brain, that there might be some connection, and the doctors might be able to figure it out between them.

I really appreciate your advice and i wish you well.Thank You.

Lorraine.
Kind Regards
Lorraine.
