?breast CA in 17 year old female

Hello,

My daughter, who is 17, found a lump in her right breast about two weeks ago.  At first I told her to just watch it for a while, I thought maybe it was because of her monthly cycle.  Then, after I felt of it, I decided to call the Health Department to see if they would check it out for her.  We have no insurance and I only work PRN.  But, I commend the health department highly.  They set her up for an ultrasound the following week and set her up to see a surgeon to possibly do a biopsy within two weeks of her ultrasound.  My daugher states that she thinks it is getting bigger.  When I first felt it, it was the size of a nickle.  She says it is now the size of a quarter.  She said yesterday it felt swollen and somewhat sore, but today it doesnt.  I am concerned for her.  We have a history of breast cancer in two anunts in my mom's family.  How do I assure her that she will be ok

This is a fairly common occurance in women in your daughter's age group. There is really nothing in particular to worry about ... I'm a bit surprised as Fibroadenomas in younger women are usually left alone and often not even biopsied. These benign tumors are a part of Fibrocystic Breast Condition and there may well be more that will develop. If you have any doubts you might seek a second opinion as to the necessity for removal.   Regards .....

My daughter has been diagnosed with a fibroadenoma.  Doctor is going to do an excisional biopsy on the 27th.  The doctor says that it is a solid fibroadenoma and it needs to be removed in the hospital.  She said it was about the size of a marble.  I am so concerned about my daugher, who is 17, going through this at such a young age.  Are there any suggestions as to how I can reassure her as well as reassure myself.  I am so worried for her.

At her age this would be more likely to be a lump related to Fibrocystic Breast Condition. These lumps can certainly vary in size over a short period of time. They are not always fluid filled cysts but are often Fibroadenomas ... solid masses but also benign. Breast cancer at age 17 would be very rare. I'm sure the Ultrasound will answer her concerns and a biopsy may not even be necessary. Lumps related to Fibrocystic Breast Condition are usually just left alone. Regards ..
