breast ache, burning pain, lumpy breasts

by Jewel529, Nov 20, 2005 12:00AM
I am 47, in good health and exercise regularly. I've had mammograms and US due to fibrous tissue since I was 35. I have had 2 cysts aspirated,2003 and 2004, benign, one lump removed via the vaccum/needle procedure,2003, benign. I have dense breasts that are very lumpy and make my monthly breast exams a chore to do. I have no breast cancer in my family and I am not on HRT. In my right breast I have had this ache, burning pain for some time now. It seems like it started shortly after the lump was removed 2 yrs ago.It does get worse with my cycle, but never completely goes away.I feel like my right breast is screaming at me all the time, saying 'here I am, can you feel me?' I have had many mammograms in the last 2-3 yrs. The last complete exam was March 2005, about 7 months ago. My doc said all looked fine and told me to up my Vit E dosage and watch my caffeine intake more carefully. That is all she had to offer. I had been evaluated just 6 months before that also! I don't feel anything unusal, just the many lumps and bumps that are always present.I do have 3 cysts in my right breast. My question, how often should I have this pain evaluated? When is it appropriate to have yet another mammogram? I have had MANY in the last few years and I just don't want to get into the habit of running to have a mammogram every few months. This pain is driving me BONKERS though. I am wondering if this could be due to the lump removal 2 yrs ago or maybe menopause related?? But would it be in only one breast? Need some advice. Do you think it is time to have it checked out again? Thanks.

Dear Jewel529:  Pain in the breast can be due to many things hormones, cysts, etc.  Most breast cancer is not painful.  However, since the pain is driving you "bonkers" you might consider seeing a medical breast specialist who can evaluate the pain and make recommendations for further evaluation, if necessary, or treatment.
