breast biopsy

breast biopsy

I have had several biopsy since 2001, my mother is a cancer survivor at the age of 49 she ha right breast masectomy, today I was diagnosed with friboadenoma with atypia further more as I read my report it stated that I had mild ductal hyperplasia with atypia.  I have experience that my biopsies are increasing with risk of developing cancer.  After speaking with my breast surgeon she reccomende that I see a plastic surgeon to discuss my options for bilateral masectomy.  Researching online I thought that my report was benign and therefore I'm not sure if I should do the bilateral masectomy.  Has anyone had a masectomy based on being diagnosed with Fibroadenoma with atypia

Dear bstraight,  Basically what this means is that there is an area in the duct of the breast with an increased number of cells than usual (hyperplasia) that look different than normal breast tissue (atypical). Atypical hyperplasia is not cancer or precancer but it may indicate a higher risk of getting cancer.  Your mother having breast cancer is also a risk factor for you.  Prophylactic mastectomy is sometimes done when a person is considered high risk.  The decision to do prophylactic mastectomy is a very personal one. There is no absolute set of circumstances in which this is the only option. You might benefit from a conversation with a breast specialist who can discuss pros and cons as they relate specifically to you and help you to arrive at the best possible decision.
