breast cancer radar ?

by genn, Oct 09, 2002 12:00AM
Has anyone heard of "Breast Cancer Radar" ?  I was only able to find it in a few places on the search engines... my boyfriend saw in the news in Kansas (I live in Arkansas) that they were using it in Joplin Missouri to diagnose breast cancer with excellent accuracy, but I can't find anywhere on-line that it is anything but experimental and not available to the general public.  It is something to do with the fact that tumors have more water than surrounding tissue and this radar seems to pinpoint malignancies missed by mammograms... and I was curious if anyone else had heard about it.  Thanks.

Dear genn, For breast cancer screening, high-quality mammography (an x-ray technique to visualize the internal structure of the breast) is the most effective technology presently generally available.

The National Cancer Institute is conducting a large multi-center study looking at digital mammography as a technique for early detection of breast cancer. This study involving 49,500 women in the United States and Canada, will compare digital mammography to standard film mammography to determine how this new technique compares to the traditional method of screening for breast cancer. Digital mammography uses computers and specially designed detectors to produce a digital image of the breast that can be displayed on high-resolution monitors.

The only information that I could find regarding "breast cancer radar" was probably the information you have seen.  It is in early stages of testing and development.
