breast cancer scam??

breast cancer scam??

I hate posting a question such as this, but I have doubts about a recent claim of breast cancer & I'm hoping to get more info. My mom died from breast cancer at 51, my grandmother is a breast cancer survivor, & a very close friend is a survivor so this has really struck a nerve for me. I'm skeptical bc this person has motive to make a false claim & I've never known anyone with breast cancer to be able to get away with such little (& frankly benign) treatment. Please listen to the situation & tell me if this scenario is a possibility. If it is cancer, wouldnt they want to remove it, then chemo, then preventative meds??  Thanks in advance!
This is a female, late 30's, PRE menopausal, no family history of breast cancer. She had a breast reduction a little over 1 yr ago. She said she had noticed an area that her plastic surgeon told her was just scar tissue, but she got a second op & was told it was not scar tissue. She said needle biopsy confirmed cancer. She did not specify what type, but said they caught it early. She says she only has to
take an oral medication to treat the cancer, no
surgery, no radiation.

We are here to help people who have, or are worried that they may have BC, not people who think someone else may be lying about her dx.

I'm not sure why you doubt this young woman, but there are many different tx plans for different types and stages of BC, and such decisions would be private medical information  between her and her doctor.

And if anyone should lie about or exaggerate any medical condition, it's really not our role to play "detective" (unless they are perpetrating fraud by soliciting funds to pay for their tx), is it?

If you are talking about someone who posted on this forum I think I know who you're talking about. I was wondering why, even though you explained your family history, you are scanning posts on our Forum. Instead of posting your doubts why not contact the person and ask them ?? If I'm correct in my identification I answered the post of this person and took it as seriously as we all take any post here. May I add that in taking time to answer your post we have spent time that may have helped someone who is concerned about their own diagnosis and not the diagnosis of others.   Thank you .....

As i stated in the first sentence of my post, i did not like posting my question here, but i did not know where else to turn. My post involves a woman known to me & i do not believe she is being truthful about her claim of cancer for many reasons. She is receiving monetary as well as other assistance from several of my relatives & mutual friends. Breast cancer is not something that is taken lightly by myself or my family. I have heard this woman speak very openly on numerous occasions about financial woes & her desire to make quick money.  I'm hoping that she would not resort to falsely claiming she has BC in order to live off of the sympathy & generosity of others, but as i said before i have my doubts because of the person i know her to be. She will never admit to being untruthful, that is why i turned to the forum. No, it is not anyones place to play detective & someones medical history IS a private matter, until they make it a public matter by announcing the information at a large gathering then proceed to accept multiple forms of assistance from my relatives. I'm just trying to
look out for my family. My moms death is still very painful for us all & i just dont want to see my loved ones be taken advantage of. I apologize for offending anyone with my post.

It seems that you might be the only one of the relatives and friends who has doubts and I can't imagine WHY anyone would doubt a cancer diagnosis in another person. If you and you alone feel so strongly then by all means confront the person and make your opinion known to her. The only way to solve a problem that you have with another is to confront that person rather than everyone else. If it's not true it will be known eventually one way or another and then she alone will suffer the guilt BUT if (and I certainly hope and pray not) she were to succumb to this disease then WHO will suffer the guilt ???? Something to think about .................

You did not offend me, but I did feel this was more of an issue of suspicion about a person's veracity than a breast cancer issue, which is what we are here for.

I understand your concern, as there have been some well-publicized cases of people lying about cancer, either for financial gain, or due to Münchhausen or Münchhausen-by-proxy psychiatric disturbances. (That is why I mentioned that playing detective might be warranted in some cases.)

On the other hand, it is very painful to have someone  minimize or dimiss your medical problem at a time you most need support. When I was  in my 20s, I had to have a skin cancer  removed from my face.  I was worried about having skin cancer and about possible facial disfiguration, as well as very self-conscious about having to go to work with a big band-aid across my nose. My supervisor (a mental health professional!)  asked about the band-aid, and when I said I had skin cancer, he replied, "No, you don't!"  You can't imagine how devastating this was to me when I was already feeling very vulnerable...

Since no outsider really knows the truth about someone else's medical status (unless it turns out to be very serious),  the best you can do is GENTLY share your doubts with those friends/relatives with whom you are very close (and after that it's up to THEM to protect themselves), and/or, as japdip suggested, explore the subject further with the person in question.

My sincere sympathy in regard to the loss of your mother,
