breast cancer the beginings of more trouble?

4 months ago i had a mastectomy for invassive cancer, lymph nodes were clear. i have been ill for 9 years and was diagnosed 6 weeks ago with a mitochondrial disorder melas. in my research of this disorder i read that cancer can result from mitochondrial abnormalities. is this true. also i didn't have a bone scan. i went to a orthropedic dr. for shoulder pain in both shoulders, with sharp pain in one. when they did an x-ray they saw a change in the bone from a previous one. i am scheduled for a bone scan this week but i have to tell you i'm scared all over again. on top of it all my grandmother had collen cancer and they tell me my chances are greater for getting it. all this cancer stuff is making me crazy. am i really at risk for getting more cancer?

Dear Tanya, Your situation is rather complex.  The simple answers are:  Your risk for another breast cancer is increased because you have had breast cancer.   Family history of colorectal cancer especially in first degree relatives (parent or sibling) is noted as a risk factor for colon cancer.  I do not know how mitochondrial disorder fits in.

Whether or not you will get more cancer is unknown but you may decide to discuss your particular situation with your oncologist or perhaps seek information from a medical genetics program.  They may be able to determine your risk more specifically and make recommendations regarding follow-up and/or screening.
