by BRENDA DERSCHON, Mar 15, 2003 12:00AM
i have breast cancer with bone mets. doing zometa. Last three months liver counts study going up. Monday was 64. Just did a liver ultrasound, a quick diagonse of fatty deposits. I was also asked if I have ever had hepititis.
Could you please shine some light on the problem.  I have been experiencing fatique and some loss of app.  With blowel changes of constapation.
Any words would be helpful. PS it showed no sighs of mets in the liver!

Thanks in advance,
Brenda

Dear Brenda, There can be abnormalities with the liver function tests caused by various things.  In general these blood tests monitor how the liver functions, you do not say what specific test is elevated, usually there are 2 or 3 different tests reported.  Diseases like hepatitis, or medications can have an effect on the liver function.  The only medication you mention is Zometa, elevation of liver enzymes is not a noted side effect of this medication.  Your other symptoms (fatigue, loss of appetite, constipation) also can be related to a number of things such as  medications, decreased activity, what your disease is doing, it is impossible to say anything more specific based only on the above information.

liver counts going up (you mentioned one number -- there are several, and whatever one you refer to, 64 isn't very high) can be due to many things. It could be an effect of the treatment, and may just need regular followup. Breast cancer can go to the liver, so that's why it was checked with a scan. At this point it's likely that the only thing to do is continue with treatments and follow the liver tests; checking for further signs as more time passes.

Hi Brenda - I was wondering you said you are being treated with Zometa.  Are you taking anything else like Arimidex, Femara, Tamoxifen?  Have you been treated with any type of chemo?  My husband has bone mets and is on Femara and Zometa.  I have heard that Tamoxifen can affect your liver.  I don't have cancer but I take medicine for high cholestral and my liver enzymes are all high.  I was just curious if you are taking other medication that may be causing this.  Thank you.  Be Well.  Idi
