breast cancer

Recently had a positive core-needle biopsy for tiny area (less than 5mm.) of microcalcifications on mammogram. Biopsy positive for DCIS, ER and PR + No invasive CA. I am 73 years old and had IBC on right side 21 years ago, followed by radiation and 8 years of Tamoxifen. Developed DCIS on left side. Surgery and radiation 13 years ago on left.
Met with breast surgeon who ordered BRCA 1 and 2 genetic testing--Negative results. She recommended bilateral simple mastectomies (prophylactic on the left?) and I have this scheduled for 8/9/11. I am wondering if this is overkill at my age? She will do bilateral sentinel node biopsies, also.

21 years ago, 13 nodes were removed on the right and all were negative.

With your history I don't think so ,,,,, you are evidently in quite good health and this may well prevent another problem in the future at which time you will be older and perhaps not as good a candidate for the preferred treatment. You seem to have a problem about every 10-12 years .... you'll be in your 80s should you have another problem and perhaps not able to tolerate what is required.  I'd certainly "go for it"; this could mean "no more worries".   Best wishes for a speedy and uneventful recovery !!
