breast fibroadenoma

I'm 45 and was just told that I have a fibroadenoma in my breast and that it's benign.  Should I have this removed?...it's 2cm in size.  Can this become cancerous?

Hi,
If a biopsy has confirmed that indeed a lump is a fibroadenoma, small, say less than 1cm, non-palpable and not associated with symptoms, the surgeon may advise that this can be observed rather than removed.
Benign fibroadenomas do not turn into cancer.
If,on the other hand, the fibroadenoma is larger, 2cm or more and the person is around 40 years old, removal is most often advised, even it the lump is benign.
I personally think that the best thing to do is to remove it and have peace of mind.
Some fibroadenomas can grow to a size of over 5cm and the concern will be about asymmetry between the breasts and the cosmetic outcome of the surgical incision when the mass is removed surgically.
Take care...
