breast lactation and burning sensation

My yougest child is 21yrs old.  I always tell my doctor that I still lactate.  I did have a pituatary tumor removed in 1983 which left me with a slightly elevated prolactin level.  Can this liquid turn into cancer?  I also get a burning sensation in my breast from time to time.  I'm getting it now, however, it's been a couple of years sense I've had this sensation. My doctor is aware of the above, however, doesn't seem to be concerned.  what should I do?

Hi there.

If you still have increased prolactin levels, then this breast discharge or secretions can be a direct consequence of such increased levels.  This is a condition called galactorrhea.  This can also be accompanied by breast engorgement and sometimes burning pain and similar sensations.  This does not increase your risk or does not directly correlate with cancer.

It is important to have the cause of the increased prolactin levels pinpointed. This can be due to a different pituitary tumor producing prolactin.  You can ask your doctor about prescription drugs for this such as bromocriptine to control the breast discharges.

Regards and God bless.
