breast leakage

breast leakage

I am 49 yrs old and about 2 yrs ago i had watery/milky discharge from both breasts spontaneaous and intermittently, only noticed if i didnt wear a bra(it also happened about 15 years ago for a short period of time, 2 years after my third child)  the discharge is sporadic, months go by and i dont have any, yet i wear a bra 95% of the time...i had the discharge examined and it showed atypical cells, mammo showed nothing, and prolactin was neg...they planned on doing a ductal lavage but the breast radiologist said because it came from both breast and more than one opening on each breast it was nothing to worry about and just "old" cells......last month i had a mammo (neg). and ultrasound that showed dilated ducts in both breasts.... should i be concerned? the atypical cells make me nervous......i havent seen my gyn since the ultrasound....the radiologist told me  not to worry about the dilataion...i asked him if i'm more at risk for cancer and he said its something that should be watched...do you think i should just get yearly mammo and sbe, or should i have a reexam of the drainage if it happens again?  thank you for your response.

It's true that spontaneous discharge coming from both breasts and multiple openings is highly unlikely to be related to cancer. And it's also true that ductal lavage would be sort of a shot in the dark under those circumstances. At minimum you should certainly continue to have annual mammograms and professional breast exam, as well as monthly self-exam. Seeing a breast surgeon would be another way of getting input.

what would cause dilation of the ducts, is it just my makeup and can atypical cells just mean they're old at my age,do they change and look different but not a problem?   thank you

generalized duct dilatation is like a variant of fibrocystic change.  Atypical cells covers a wide range, and can be seen in a variety of conditions from cancer to fibrocystic change.
