breast lump negative mammo

I have a small lump in my right breast that was also felt by my physician .She sent me for a mammo and an ultrasound. The mammo showed that I have dense, fibrous breast tissue and the radiologist was unable to see anything. The ultrasound was also negative, she was unable to find the mass. It has been there for about six weeks without any change in size or feel. I also can feel a couple of very small lumps under my right arm. I am scheduled to consult with a breast surgeon in a couple of days. I want to know what the lumps are, should I demand a biopsy? There are too many stories of women waiting too long and doctors telling tham nothing was wrong. I am 43 years old, my first child was born at 18 and there is no history of breast cancer in my family.

Thanks, Sammy. You are right, I saw the surgeon today and he is taking the lump out. Hopefully, that will be the end of it. Best of luck to you.

Hi I think every lump should be checked out to be on the safe side. I have also had a Mammo and an ultrasound, the mammo shows a few lumps and has also said that i have fibrocystic tissue which makes it difficult to see anything behind it. My ultra sound showed a couple of leasions but the mammo didnt mention them at all.I had the ultrasound first then the mammo. It has taken me since June to get a second opinion about the difference between both tests but I have finally got my refereal to a breast specialist.
I suggest if it makes you uncomfortable with the results maybe you can ask for an MRI, its your health and only you know but I would push for a different test since they have already told you that you have dense tissue which makes it harder to see anything that could be underlying. Having a biopsy would be good as well on one of the other sites one of the ladies saying is "the only good lump is one in a jar"
Take care and dont let your nerves get the better of you.

Dear gaylpat:  Without examination and review of the mammogram and ultrasound, we cannot speculate on what these lumps might be.  Certainly, dense breast tissue can often feel lumpy.  The breast surgeon will hopefully be able to clarify what these could be and make any appropriate recommendations for further investigation if appropriate.
