breast tumor size

breast tumor size

I had a mastectomy for ductal carcinoma last month.  The onocologist said I didn't need chemo because the tumor size is only concerned with the invasive part.  My overall tumor size was 1.2 cm with 1.2mm invasive area.  Sentinal nodes (6) were negative. ER positive at 79%, necrosis and calcifications were remarked on.  Tumor grade was 2 (of 3, I guess?). The onc. said I "was cured" and recommended Tamixofen.  When assessing tumor size is it only the invasive area that is measured?  Do you think chemotherapy would be indicated according th the guidelines that say over 1 cm should have chemotherapy?  Thank you

Dear callie406:  The invasive tumor is the most important part when considering chemotherapy.  If the rest of the tumor is DCIS, then chemo may not be necessary if the invasive component is, in fact, only 1.2mm (have not seen millimeters in fractions -although it is possible).  I would confirm that it is mm and not a typo.  Maybe get the pathology reviewed.  The tamoxifen is an appropriate recommendation, assuming all the facts are accurate.
