ca 125 related to breast cancer

by corky13, Oct 26, 2009 12:20PM
Hi,
I was wondering how the ca 125 relates to breast cancer. I know that this is a tumor marker for ovarian cancer, but I also read that that is marker can be elevated in breast cancer as well. If a ca 125 is elevated and the vaginal ultrasound is normal would it be advisable to get a breast examination? How high would the ca 125 be if it was caused by breast cancer?

Thank you,
Corky

Dear Corky:  CA125 is a tumor marker that is used to follow ovarian cancer that has been diagnosed.  It is a non specific marker that should not be used in the setting of screening.  The CA125 could be elevated for a variety of reasons and is not helpful in the setting of breast screening.  Breast examinations should be done monthly by the patient, yearly by the doctor and mammograms and ultrasounds should begin at 40, regardless of a CA125 value.
