calcification and mam changes

I had to return for more mammograms and then an ultra sound due to changes from last years mammogram and what they called calcifications. Now I have to have a breast surgeon consult and a biopsy.  I have read that 80% of people having breast biopsies are negatve for cancer, is that true?  It sounds good but still I worry.

Hi there.

It is correct that majority mammogram detected breast lesions would turn out eventually to be benign lesions once sampled or excised.  However, the chance of the lesion to be benign or malignant also depends on the characteristics of the calcifications and other mammogram parameters.  These characteristics are summarized using a standardized reporting of mammograms known as the BIRADS classification.

Based on the BIRADS score, the probability of malignancy can also be estimated (but the definitive diagnosis will still depend on the biopsy).  Ask your radiologist about the BIRADS score of your mammogram (more info: http://biradsclass.blogspot.com), as this would direct further work ups and tests.

I hope your biopsy would be as uneventful as possible.  Regards and God bless.
