calcifications

Finally got my report from my mammogram..for the past 2 years I have been called back due to enlarging cyst..The cyst is getting larger again.  They also found a new 5mm nodule that I am having an ultrasound for on this Tuesday..Also In the past I have had innumerable calcifications  Now according to the report they have increased in the central aspect of the breast..this is both breasts..I am having magnify and 90 degrees views on Tuesday also.  Are these increases a concern?   My daughter had breast cancer at age 33 she is doing good now.  I am 63 and no HRT post menopausal..
Thank you,

Dear jerseymary6, Calcifications or microcalcifications are actually very fine specks of calcium that light up on a mammogram. Sometimes they can be an indication of cancer or precancer. Based on their pattern on the mammogram it gives the radiologist clues as to their cause. For instance microcalcifications that are more scattered are probably due to benign (non-cancerous) causes (such as normal wear and tear on the tissue), a “cluster” of microcalcifications may increase concern that there may be an underlying tumor.  It is difficult without viewing of the films and ability to to put in context to comment on whether the increase in calcifications in your specific case is cause for concern or not.
