calcifications

calcifications

44 year old, two children, 1983 bilateral reduction mammoplasty, 1999 biopsy of fat lump(begnin). No family history of breast cancer. My mother has "teacup", diffuse calcifications. I recently had my third 6 month follow-up mamogram (mammogram) done for a cyst. During the mamogram (mammogram) they found microcalifications near the chest wall on the other breast. They did ultra sound (for the cyst) and "cone" and magnified views of the calcifications. Breast surgeon found no related lumps although I have fibrocystic breasts. The calcifications were clustered, pleomorphic and less than 5 mm. Looking back on past films they saw the califications on a film 6 months ago and both the cyst and calcifications have not changed "one iota" in the past 6 months.  2 radiologists and the breast surgeon said if I wanted, we could wait and follow-up in 6 months because there was a high chance the calcification were begnin, or we could try a sterotactic biopsy (if too close to chest wall then open biopsy). Can I relax? Is it very good news that nothing has changed in 6 months? I'm opting to wait and see. Dr.'s are concerned too may biopsies will create hard to read films when I am older and at higher risk.

Dear virg m:  I think it is good that nothing has changed.  On the other hand, it is not a guarantee that there is no problem.  The only way to know for sure, is to biopsy.  It is not wrong to wait and see, it's strictly a matter of your and your doctor's comfort with this.
