classification in the breast

My biopsy came back no maligancy, but they did say it could be a pre-cursor to cancer.  What does that mean?

Hi there.

There are breast findings that can be termed as "premalignant lesions" which means that this is a precursor towards a cancer, and there are findings that can give you an "increased risk" of developing an invasive cancer.  Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) is an example of the former, while Lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS) is an example of the latter.  Certain findings in the mammogram can make the doctor suspect cancer especially with patterns of calcifications.  There are calcification patterns pointing out to benign lesion and there are patterns favoring a malignant cause.  I suggest you discuss the above conditions with your doctors to find out which is which.  Regards.
