Microcalcifications are tiny specks of calcium deposits that can be scattered throughout the breast or appear in cluster. The mammogram you had in 2001 on your right breast was not of real concern since no follow up was suggested. This time though, the Microcalcification on your left breast appears clustered (Grouped together) and for this reason you are having an additional test done because it's more worrisome.I don't think that you should be overly troubled by this though....many clustered Microcalcifications return a benign finding, but should of course be regularly monitored.Good luck for your upcoming mammogram.

I had a cluster of calcifications in my right breast and after having a biopsy, it turned out to be nothing but benign tissue.  They are probably sending you for what is called a spot magnification mammogram, which is where they take extra pictures of your  affected breast for further evaluation.  Don't be surprised if you are asked to have a breast ultrasound done.  If you are told you need a biopsy, you should have one.  I can tell that you are worried and I know exactly how you feel because I was going through the same thing last month and boy was I ever worried.  I am only 39 years old and other than an Aunt that had breast cancer, I don't have much of a family history.  Chances are they are benign so I wouldn't worry yourself, but take all of the tests you are asked to take because microcalcifications can be tricky and until a biopsy is done, they really don't know what is there.  Take Care!
