conflicting reports on mammogram finding

I am a 36-year-old woman with no family history of breast cancer. I had my baseline mammogram last week and it came back abnormal. I went in for an ultrasound and the radiologist couldn't determine for sure if what was seen on the ultrasound was a cyst, so I was called in for a core needle biopsy. I was on the table and the surgeon - he said it was "probably benign" was ready to do the procedure, and he couldn't find the nodule (it has well-defined borders) with the ultrasound. He said what he was seeing on the ultrasound was probably normal breast tissue, but he definitely saw something on the mammogram and said what he saw looked like a lymph node. I told him my mother also had a fibroadenoma on a mammogram once that wasn't biopsied, and he said it could be that too. He then said for my peace of mind I could come in for a stereotactic biopsy, or I could come for a follow-up mammogram in 6mos. He recommended the follow-up exam. The next day my primary physician called and said he recommended the biopsy. Now I don't know what to do. I don't want a biopsy if it's unnecessary. Any suggestions? By the way, I don't have my official mammogram report yet.

Hi,

I would suggest you get the mammogram report. Also, it would be best to ask your doctor that would an MRI help at this stage?

It would be best to discuss this with your doctor and surgeon in detail and ask them why they suggesting different plan of management.

It would be ok to wait for 6 months and get a re - evaluation and repeat radiological investigations done. It could then be decided whether a biopsy procedure is required or not.

Till then, you need to carry on regular breast self exams and report any abnormal features to your doctor.

Do let us know about the progress in your case.
Hope this helps.
Good luck.
