cyst that can not be aspirated

by awkeen, Oct 27, 2007 09:48AM
I found a lump in my right breast.  I have fibrocystic breasts anyway, but this felt different than my other breast tissue.  Also, it is hard/fixed/nontender.  Went to my gyn who sent me for a mammogram, which showed a 2.5cm nodule.  From there, I was sent for an US which showed a 2.5cm cyst.  When I looked at the screen during the ultrasound, it looked like a cyst to me (untrained eyes, but...).  I saw a surgeon yesterday.  He wanted to aspirate it but when he tried, he didn't get fluid.  He then said that it is just too small to aspirate and just to keep watching it.  Should I just watch it like he says or should I seek second opinion?

Dear awkeen,   All tests give different types of information.  An ultrasound helps to differentiate between a solid structure and a fluid filled or cystic structure.   As long as there is reasonable certainty that this is a cyst (based on the evaluation) there may not be any further procedures necessary. Your decision of whether or not to seek a second opinion depends on your comfort level with the opinion.
