cytopathology report

I am 53-yrs-old.  Mammogram shows that I have a small lump (5mm x 6mm) in my left breast.  Doctor did a needle biopsy. The result under microscopy is as follows:

Cellular smears reveal abundant inflammatory cells and blood cells. Some hyperplastic epithelial cells are present.  The inflammatory cells include polymorphs, lymphocytes and foamy histiocytes, latter predominates.

Negative for malignancy

Diagnosis:    FNAC, Left Breast Cyst

Degenerate yield consistent with inflamed cyst.

Doctor suggests that I should do a Mammotome Breast Biopsy.

Please explain in simple form what the biopsy result meant and should I go ahead with the mammotome breast biopsy.

Thank you.

Dear Brisk:  In simple terms, the biopsy is negative for cancer.  This means that the sample that was obtained in the needle is not cancer.  This raises a question; did the needle get a sample of the right tissue?  Presumably, the doctor who did the procedure has some doubt.  It is for this reason that the mammotome is recommended.  Given the situation, it may be advisable to proceed.  It is better to be certain that this is, in fact, negative.

the report says it wasn't cancer, nor was it suspicious for cancer; it was a cyst with inflammation. If a larger biopsy is recommended it may be because of uncertainty whether the FNA was representative. You really need to ask your doctor exactly why the larger biopsy is recommended: not because I disagree, but because only he/she knows the whole picture.
