detection procedures

Hello all,
5 months ago I had an abnormal breast mammo. Then had an ultrasound which didn't show anything. I was then referred to a breast surgeon who reviewed my film and said 'you are here because you have an area that is not clear on the mammo, but does not definately show anything. (no clear mass or palpable lump) She said that in her opinion she didn't think it was cancer, but of course the only sure way is a biopsy. She scheduled me for needle guided surgery. The surgery was cancelled because her radiologist reviewed the film and said he would not know where to put the wire. Then they sent me for an MRI, that's where my problem lies. I am extremely claustrophobic. I have now tried 2 times to complete the MRi (with drugs) but have fought the drugs and have freaked out both times. Now what do I do??? Has anyone gone through something like this and what were the next steps?

Have you discussed the stereotactic biopsy where they identify the area on a mammogram and have the needle directed to the coordinates on the mammogram?  I really feel for you.  What else are they suggesting?  Have you had a second mammogram where they magnify the area?  At least you are on the right tract.  Also, some MRI machines are open, try to find a center that has the newer machines.  Good luck, keep us posted

They didn't feel the mammo or the compressed mammogram gave them a clear picture of where to put the needle. That's why they wanted to send me for the MRI. I live in Northern Ontario, Canada, and the closest MRI centre is 100 miles from where I live. I suppose the bigger centres like Toronto would have some of the open machines. They are now suggesting that I go for another mammo next month to look for changes. Still am wondering if there is a way to get through the MRI though, although they've booked me twice and probably would be reluctant to book me again as I'd only be taking another persons spot if I couldn't do it again. And of course, scared that if it is cancer, then I've really screwed up!
