diagnostic mammogram

I have recently been referred for a third diagnostic mammogram within a one year period.  From the info I read, there are calcification clusters and a mass that is likely a cyst.  This last time, I was told that I was to come back in 6 months because comparing digital to film mammograms was like comparing apples to oranges.  I'm feeling concerned and I am not sure what I should ask for and when I should ask for it.

With three diagnostic mammograms and a personal feeling of concern, I think you should ask your doctor for some help to find peace of mind. If the digital vs. plain film mammograms are difficult to compare, perhaps an MRI would resolve the issue? Are the calcifications small or big? Microcalcifications (small ones) deserve a closer look than macrocalcifications (big ones), as these are more closely associated with rapid cell turnover in the breast tissue.

At any rate, ask for clarification and then request a follow-up study as soon as you can. Let us know how things go for you!

If a mass was discovered that is likely a cyst then an ultrasound should clarify this. As a rule any cluster of microcalcifications requires some type of biopsy to determine the cause. I don't "get" the explanation of difficulty in comparing digital with film .... first time I've ever heard that as a reason for anything. I personally would be getting a second opinion .... either by another prescribing Physician or I would request that my films be read by another Radiologist. Someone is dropping the ball here so you need to find a new "someone".   Be demanding if you have to but don't just accept this re-check and waiting game. you deserve better !!   Good Luck
