diagnostic mamogram(mammogram) at 30

I have been in the process of having a lump checked out for the past several weeks.  I have fibrocystic breasts, but this feels very different and is accompanied by non-cyclical pain.  Nothing showed up on the ultrasound (it was done just weeks after weaning).  A surgeon thinks it feels normal, but has ordered a mamogram (mammogram) just for peace of mind (he said we have a good shot at imaging my 'type of breasts').  Everyone else said I was too young for a mamogram (mammogram).  I had my three children in less than four years and my once firm 38DD breasts have lost a lot of density and sag terribly.  Based on this, are the chances of getting clear images on the mamogram (mammogram) better?

Dear Bass:  The main reason for waiting to do a mammogram is that tissue tends to be very dense, making mammography difficult to read.  Also, the risk of breast cancer in 30ish year old women is low enough that benefit from such an examination is low.  That's not to say that it is always the case or that there could be no benefit from doing a mammogram when a problem is being identified.  The fact that your breasts now sag probably has more to do with the expansion and loss of elasticity during and following pregnancy.  Hopefully, this mammogram will shed light on your "lump."
